It emphasizes modes of thought relative to the social and political milieu of the respective times, as reflected in the works of such writers as Wheatley, DuBois, Hurston, Dunbar, Hughes, Harden, McKay, Wright, Ellison, Baraka, Walker, and Baldwin.
